PETER GARLAND, Composer: It's difficult to survive as a freelance composer. I don't teach. I'm a little bit of a kind of the dropout generation of the late 60s, early 70s. Kind of independent, and for that reason I've been kind of outside of academia, which perhaps has been good for my music but difficult for my economic status. And so I just had a kind of crisis in '91 and decided to sort of travel.
