is Weekend Edition. I'm Liane Hansen.
[tape segment]: In 1964, the now defunct New York Herald-Tribune
reported that the Danish national drink was beer and that the Danish
national weakness was - another beer. Well, this past week beer in
space made news. The German brewer Becks put its finest ingredients
in a spiral tube aboard the shuttle Columbia to determine whether
weightlessness and exposure to cosmic rays will alter yeast genetically,
to deliver a beer with more taste but less likely to produce a hangover.
Scientists will make sample batches when the yeast comes home. By
