ROBERT SIEGEL, Host: Many Israelis oppose this agreement with the
Palestinians and many more are skeptical of it. But peace, autonomy
and Yitzhak Rabin's government have many supporters in Israel, even
if the salute of the movement would be more of a resigned shrug than
any gesture of militant enthusiasm. I think we tend to miss that
side of Israeli life - the pragmatic, conciliatory, non-ideological
side. In part, out of eagerness to cover the conflict, journalists
spend most of their time in Jerusalem, a convenient base for rides
to the West Bank and, a still more convenient metaphor of division
and the unyielding claims of faith and history.
