LINDA WERTHEIMER, Host: Japan is in the final hours of a national
campaign, and change is in the air. Opinion polls suggest that Sunday'
s vote could end the nearly 40-year old monopoly by the ruling Liberal
Democratic Party, the LDP. Many Japanese voters are fed up with pervasive
corruption in their government as well as the LDP's failure to enact
promised government reforms. But the LDP is far from conceding defeat.
As NPR's Marjorie Sun reports from Tokyo, the LDP is now trying to
scare voters into staying with the party.
