There is an odd crook in the Rocky Mountains where the great granite
backbone of the continent twists out of its general north-south direction
for a little ways. This occurs near Yellowstone, as though the earth
were so astonished by what happens there that it scattered off to
regather its wits. The ridge line of the Rockies turns west there
across southern Montana for about 60 miles and following it, you come
to a long valley at about 6,000 feet with a single road running its
