NEAL CONAN, Host: Randy Shilts' [sp] 1987 best-seller And the Band
Played On is a science-detective story about the discovery of the
virus that causes AIDS and the politics that contributed to its spread.
It's been made into a movie which debuts on HBO tonight and features
a small galaxy of Hollywood actors, including Richard Gere, Lily Tomlin,
Steve Martin, Anjelica Huston, Alan Alda, and a starring role for
Matthew Bodine [sp] as Don Francis [sp], an early researcher of the
epidemic at the Centers for Disease Control. In this scene, Dr. Francis
spars with Dr. Robert Gallow, played by Alan Alda, over taking credit
for the discovery of AIDS virus from French ...
