NEAL CONAN, Host: Randy Shilts' [sp] 1987 best-seller And the Band Played On is a science-detective story about the discovery of the virus that causes AIDS and the politics that contributed to its spread. It's been made into a movie which debuts on HBO tonight and features a small galaxy of Hollywood actors, including Richard Gere, Lily Tomlin, Steve Martin, Anjelica Huston, Alan Alda, and a starring role for Matthew Bodine [sp] as Don Francis [sp], an early researcher of the epidemic at the Centers for Disease Control.
