JACKI LYDEN, Host: When Manu Dibango's `Soul Makossa' hit American discos in 1972, African pop music was virtually unknown in this country. The sax player from Cameroon helped usher in American desire for Afropop and paved the way for artists like Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel, who drew on African sounds for their music.
