JACKI LYDEN, Host: When Manu Dibango's `Soul Makossa' hit American
discos in 1972, African pop music was virtually unknown in this country.
The sax player from Cameroon helped usher in American desire for
Afropop and paved the way for artists like Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel,
who drew on African sounds for their music.

LYDEN: Today the 60-year-old Dibango revisits his hit `Soul Makossa'
on his new CD which is called Wakafrika [sp]. The recording is sprinkled
with invitation only international stars including Gabriel and Sinead
O'Connor, Ladysmith Black Mombazo, Ray Lema [sp], and there's a raft
of Afropop hits on it ...
