BOB EDWARDS, Host: In studying a disorder called sleep apnea, researchers have discovered that the problem may be more common than once thought. The findings suggest that some people who suffer from drowsiness during the day may have sleep apnea and not be aware of it. NPR's Christopher Joyce has this report.

CHRISTOPHER JOYCE, Reporter: Sleep apnea occurs when the muscles at the back of the throat relax during sleep. For many people, this causes snoring, but for those born with an unusually narrow air passage, the throat closes up and people actually stop breathing for ten seconds or more.
