ALEX CHADWICK, Host: The Australian-born screenwriter and best-selling
author James Clavell has died of cancer. Mr. Clavell emigrated to
this country 40 years ago after serving in World War II. He found
work in Hollywood, first as a screenwriter and later as a producer
and director on films that included The Fly, The Great Escape, and
To Sir With Love, which won him a Writer's Guild Award. Mr. Clavell
also was known for his novels, five of which became best-sellers.
Tai-Pan and Noble House were set in the Far East, as was Shogun,
which chronicled the exploits of a British navigator in Japan. ...
