UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 6 (IPS) -- The world's major Middle Eastern
arms buyers, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, and the United
Arab Emirates, are running away from the U.N. Arms Register.
"The Register has been in existence for four years now, but none
of these countries has ever participated," says Natalie Goldring
of the Washington-based British American Security Information
Council (BASIC).
She says the Register has been made a mockery because of "the
terrible performance" of Middle Eastern nations who refuse to go
public with their arms stockpiles provided mostly by the United
