The Electromagnetic Spectrum: Waves of Energy

Only a tiny band of the entire range of wavelengths radiated by the sun exists as visible light. The rest ranges from high-energy gamma rays to low-energy radio waves. All together, the sun's radiation covers a range of wavelengths called the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum.
Even though visible light occupies only a sliver of the electromagnetic spectrum, light represents a large portion of the total energy emitted by the sun. In fact, of the solar energy that reaches the earth, 42 percent consists of visible light. The rest is mostly infrared and ultraviolet radiation. Visible and infrared radiation heat the planet. ...
