Earth's Solar-Powered Climate
You won't find the biggest engine on earth on a locomotive, a ship, or anything else made by humans. Earth's biggest engine is the surface of the planet itself. This huge heat engine runs on solar power, and its moving parts are the atmosphere and the oceans. The engine drives earth's climate.
A heat engine uses heat flow to make things move. The engine in a car, for example, burns gasoline. Gases (heated by combustion inside the cylinders) rapidly expand, pushing pistons down inside the engine. The motion of the pistons is harnessed to turn cranks, gears, and other parts, which finally turn the drive wheels.
