Auroras: Splendors in the Sky

Cascades of color decorate the night sky with shifting, shimmering arcs, curtains, and rays. The light shows are eerily beautiful, and silent. They occur almost nightly in the high latitudes. The aurora borealis, or northern lights, can be seen from time to time over much of Europe and North America. About once every 10 years, skywatchers as far south as Cuba see it. The aurora australis, in the Southern Hemisphere, has been seen as far north as Singapore.
