Greenhouse Gases: The Lineup
Sometimes a little bit of something goes a long way. It's certainly true with substances in the atmosphere known as greenhouse gases. These gases make up only a tiny bit of the atmosphere (about 1 percent), but without them earth would be a cold and lifeless ice ball.
Nitrogen and oxygen make up most of the gases in air, slightly more than 99 percent. They are essential in their own right, but they play no direct role in the greenhouse effect.
