The 1980s were the hottest decade on record. The heat sparked forest fires in the United States and elsewhere. High temperatures may have caused the severe droughts that occurred in Africa and North America during that decade. Pointing to the 1980s, some people claim that a period of global warming has begun.
But climate is defined as an area's weather patterns over many years. Scientists caution against drawing conclusions from only a decade's worth of unusually high global temperatures.
