Ooze and Mud on the Ocean Floor

The scientific name for the soft, gooey ooze of organic material that covers parts of the ocean floor is--ooze. And the scientific name for the mushy mud of inorganic material on other parts of the ocean floor? Mud, of course. These sediments cover the ocean floor to an average depth of about 600 meters (2,000 ft), 10 times deeper than the thickest layer of soil on land.
Ooze forms as ocean plants and animals die, settle to the bottom, and decay. Coral, shells, and the skeletons of tiny animals make up most of this material. The soft parts of the animals' bodies, as well as their wastes, are eaten by deep-sea scavengers. Only the ...
