Thanks to Teddy Roosevelt, Americans today enjoy one of the world's finest national park systems. In his two terms as president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt promoted so strongly the issue of saving the U.S. environment that he became known as "the Great Conservationist."
As a boy, Roosevelt was sickly and spent much of his time in libraries and museums, reading and studying. There he developed a love of science and nature. When the young Roosevelt was growing up in New York City, his room often smelled of the dead mice and other creatures he collected to study.
