Case in Point: Do ORVs Doom the Dunes?

All sorts of people enjoy the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Campers, hikers, berry pickers, bird-watchers, anglers, photographers, and picnickers happily share the largest coastal dune area on the West Coast--13,026 hectares (32,174 acres). But one sound interrupts this harmony--the roar of ORV engines.
"ORV" stands for "off-road vehicle." ORVs include dune buggies, motorcycles, four-wheel-drive vehicles, and pickup trucks. ORV users come to the recreation area to drive on the sandy beaches and huge dunes that tower up to 122 meters (400 ft) above the coast.
