Factors in both Europe and the United States surfaced immediately after
the end of the Napoleonic wars that set off a long, steady period
of immigration, which coincided with the development of America as
a strong, prosperous nation. The story of modern immigration begins
after 1815 and is closely intertwined with the story of how the United
States changed from a small nation of colonists clinging to the eastern
seaboard into a transcontinental country of immense power and potential.
