Alien Acts of 1798: A package of laws that enabled the government
to suppress political dissent in the name of national security and
to move against noncitizen aliens at will. It included the Alien Friends
Act, which required aliens to register with the government and allowed
the president, John Adams, to deport any alien he deemed dangerous.
These laws were allowed to expire in 1801.

immigrants into the mainstream of traditional American society.
