Animals that spend part of their lives in water and part on land are
called amphibians. Usually, they hatch from eggs laid in streams or
ponds. As adults, they move to land to live. The word amphibian comes
from a Greek word that means ``living a double life.''
The animals in the class Amphibia are placed by scientists midway
between fishes and reptiles in the animal kingdom. They probably developed
millions of years ago from fish that stayed out of water for longer
and longer periods. The first amphibians were the forerunners of all
backboned land animals. None of the early amphibians exists today.
