ANALGESIC

When you have a headache, fever, or a bad cold you might be given aspirin or some other pill to relieve the aches and pains. Your grandmother might need to take medicine to control her arthritis. Something that helps to stop or reduce pain is called an analgesic.

Analgesics vary greatly in strength. Mild analgesics can control a temporary pain like a headache. Most households have some in the medicine chest. Aspirin is the most common of these remedies. Some people prefer other mild, non-aspirin analgesics, such as Tylenol, because aspirin, a type of acid, may upset their stomach.
