Marian Anderson was 6 years old when she first sang in public, in the choir of the Union Baptist Church in Philadelphia, her home city. She grew up to became one of the world's greatest singers.

Marian Anderson's parents were poor. Her church helped to pay for singing lessons. After years of voice training, she entered a contest to sing with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and won first place out of 300 contestants.

She went to Europe, where her concerts thrilled many people. But she was not allowed to sing in Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., in 1939, because she was black. ...
