Caves can be one of the most interesting forms of nature to study. Caves are hollow spaces in the earth or in the rocky sides of cliffs or hills. They are found all over the world. A cave may have one room, or chamber, or it may have many connected chambers, like an underground apartment. A very large cave is called a cavern.

Kinds of Caves

Wind caves are found in mountainsides or cliffs where strong winds blow frequently. Sand and dirt blow about with such force that they act like sandpaper, grinding away the weak spots in the rocks. A hole is slowly hollowed out and it grows bigger and bigger to form a cave.
