Fish were the leading form of life during the Devonian Period (the Age of Fish), which scientists believe began about 400 million years ago and lasted about 60 million years. Today there are still about 21,000 different kinds of fish. They range in size from the Philippine goby, less than half an inch (1 cm) long, to the whale shark, which grows up to 60 feet (18 m) long and weighs up to 15 tons (13.5 tonnes).

Ichthyologists (scientists who study fish) have divided them into three main groups--jawless fish, cartilaginous fish, and bony fish.
