On a walk in the woods, you may come upon bright orange bridges growing
on the side of a fallen log. They are one kind of fungus. A doctor
may prescribe penicillin for an infection. The penicillin comes from
a mold, another kind of fungus. Yeast, which makes bread light and
fluffy, is yet another kind of fungus. Other familiar family members
are mushrooms, puffballs, and plant-rusts. As you can see, some fungi
are important to us as foods or as medicines. Others are very poisonous.
Fungi are rich in protein, and scientists today are working to see
if they can breed certain types of fungi to be the ``miracle foods'
' of tomorrow.
