You have probably watched gunfights in movies or on television taking
place in the dusty streets of Dodge City. Have you ever wondered where
Dodge City is? It is in southwestern Kansas. The town was founded
in 1872 on the Arkansas River near Fort Dodge. Railroads reached it
three years later, and Dodge City became a cattle town.
History was made in Kansas largely because the state lies at the nation'
s crossroads. It is at the very center of the 48 states that make
up the main part of the United States. Long wagon trains traveling
