The koala is a woolly, tree-climbing mammal that resembles a teddy bear. It is known also as the Australian bear or native sloth, but in fact it is neither a bear nor a sloth. Koalas live only in Australia, and the females have pouches, like female kangaroos. When a koala is born, it is only three-fourths of an inch (2 cm) long. The newborn koala lives in its mother's pouch until it is 6 months old and measures about 6 inches (15 cm) long. It then begins to ride around on its mother's back until it learns to find its own food. Animals that carry their young in pouches are called marsupials.
