Los Angeles, California, has been one of the fastest-growing cities
in the United States during this century. In 1900, its population
was a little more than 100,000. Today, Los Angeles is the second largest
city in the nation, with about 3.5 million people. Its metropolitan
area, with nearly 9 million people, ranks second only to that of New
York City. Los Angeles covers about 460 square miles (1,200 sq. km).
It completely surrounds several independent cities, such as Beverly
