Louis I (778-840) succeeded his father Charlemagne as king of the Franks and emperor of the Romans, in a.d. 814. Louis divided his lands among his four sons, who fought each other bitterly and rebelled against their father. Louis I supported the Catholic Church, and was called ``The Pious.''

Louis II (846-879) was called ``The Stammerer.'' He succeeded his father Charles II as king of France in 877.

Louis III (about 863-882) was the son of Louis II. He became joint ruler with his brother Carloman in 879.
