The National Guard consists of units (groups) of volunteer, part-time soldiers from each of the 50 United States, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. The National Guard has two branches--the Army National Guard with about 460,000 members, and the Air National Guard with about 120,000 members.

The National Guard began in colonial times as the militia, groups of civilian volunteers trained to deal with local emergencies. After the Revolutionary War, the Constitution provided for the continuation of the militia. In 1824, the New York State Militia named itself the National Guard. By the beginning of the 1900s, most of the states had followed New York's example.
