The famous voyage to the Americas by Christopher Columbus in 1492 led
other explorers to search for some way to sail past the American continents
and reach Asia. The Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan found a
route around the southern tip of South America in 1520. But explorers
continued to search for hundreds of years for a ``Northwest Passage'
' around North America.
The English explorer Sir Martin Frobisher tried several times to find
the Northwest Passage during the 1570s. He explored the eastern approaches
to the Canadian Arctic. Another British explorer, Henry Hudson, reached
