The northern third of Canada consists of a vast wintry domain of forest,
tundra, and ice. It is the largest frontier in North America. Eskimos
were the first people to live here.
The land and islands north of Canada's ten provinces are divided between
the Yukon Territory, next to Alaska, and the three districts of Mackenzie,
Keewatin, and Franklin, which together form the Northwest Territories.
Half of the Northwest Territories is located north of the Arctic Circle.
Much of this northern half is low-lying, but in the far north, barren,
