Europe's smallest republic, San Marino, is situated high in the Apennine Mountains of central Italy. This republic, which is only about the size of Manhattan Island, is completely surrounded by Italy.

The tiny nation's capital, also named San Marino, is an ancient walled town. The three peaks of the mountain, called Mount Titano, rise above the town. Farmers grow wheat, corn, and grapes in the fertile valley at the foot of Mount Titano. Thousands of tourists come every month to enjoy the landscape and to buy wine, wool, and postage stamps.
