Many people are afraid of snakes. They think that snakes are slimy and dangerous. In fact, most snakes are dry to the touch and harmless. Even the poisonous kinds kill only for food. A snake is a reptile- -a cold-blooded, air-breathing animal with a backbone and a scaly skin. A snake's body is long and narrow and almost always legless. Pythons and boas have tiny leg remnants like spurs, but these are no longer used for locomotion. Unlike other reptiles, snakes do not have ear openings or eardrums and cannot hear sounds in the air.
