South Dakota received its name from the Sioux, who call themselves the Dakota. South Dakota's nicknames are the ``Coyote State'' and the ``Sunshine State.''

Each year, millions of tourists visit South Dakota, especially the Black Hills in the western part. These hills are mountains, and they are not really black; their pine forests give them a dark green color. But the Sioux called them the Black Hills. Located in these hills is Mount Rushmore, which is famous for its huge sculpture of the faces of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. Near Mount Rushmore is Harney Peak, the highest mountain east of the Rockies.
