The Supreme Court is the highest court in the United
States. Its establishment was authorized by the
Constitution with the statement, ``The judicial power of
the United States shall be vested in one Supreme Court, and
in such inferior [lower] courts as the Congress may from
time to time ordain and establish.'' The Supreme Court
heads the judicial branch of the Federal Government.
The Supreme Court consists of eight associate justices and
one chief justice. They are appointed by the President with
the approval of the U.S. Senate. Justices are appointed for
life, and their salaries cannot be lowered while they
