It is usually easy for us to tell when something is hot and when something is cold without bothering to take the temperature of these things. But sometimes it is important to know exactly what the temperature is. For example, a doctor must know your exact temperature when you are sick. This helps the doctor diagnose what is wrong with you. Also, when you bake a pie or a cake, you must know exactly what the temperature is inside the oven.

Scientists often study the behavior of matter at very high or very low temperatures. At such temperatures, some substances change their characteristics. The study of occurrences at very low temperatures is called cryogenics.
