The legends of ancient Greece tell of a ten-year war between the Greeks and the Trojans. The Trojans lived in a city called Troy, located in Asia Minor (now Turkey). Homer tells of the Trojan War in his story- poem the Iliad. (Ilium was the Greek name for Troy.) The area that has traditionally been considered the site of Troy was actually the location of several ancient cities. Archeologists have unearthed several cities, each one built on top of the ruins of another, dating back to about 3000 b.c. The Troy of legend probably existed in the 1200s b.c. Historians believe that the Greeks may have attacked Troy for its goods or to destroy its power.
