Martin Van Buren, the eighth President, was the first President to
have been born in the United States. The previous seven Presidents
had been born in the British colonies before the colonies declared
independence and became the United States.
Martin Van Buren lived in Kinderhook, New York. He graduated from
the village school at the age of 14. He studied law in Kinderhook
and in a law office in New York City and became a lawyer at the age
of 21. Van Buren then returned to his native town to practice law.
In 1807, Van Buren married one of his cousins, Hannah Hoes. The couple
had four sons before Hannah Van Buren died, just 12 years after their
marriage.
