Animals can become sick or injured just as human beings do. A doctor
who treats sick or injured animals is a veterinarian. His or her profession
is veterinary medicine.
Veterinarians working in cities usually have private practices and
treat people's pets. These doctors often have animal hospitals where
pet owners can take their sick pets. Sometimes the veterinarian only
has to give the pet a checkup or an injection, such as one to prevent
rabies. The veterinarian who treats pets should know how to get along
with people. The owners of sick animals often become more nervous
