The Vice President is second in rank to the President of the United States and is elected along with the President. According to the Constitution, the Vice President must have the same qualifications as the President- -be a native-born citizen, at least 35 years old, and a resident of the United States for at least 14 years.

The custom for the Vice President to assume the Presidency was established by John Tyler in 1841, when he succeeded William Henry Harrison, the first President to die while in office.
