Most of West Virginia lies in a vast coal region that stretches from Alabama to Pennsylvania. Only Kentucky produces more coal each year than West Virginia does.

Coal brings West Virginia hundreds of millions of dollars every year. It also presents problems that are hard to solve. There are two kinds of coal mines in West Virginia. One is the underground mine. The other is the strip mine, or surface mine. Underground mines are dangerous. In spite of safety rules and new machines to prevent fires and caveins, accidents still happen. When they do, miners may be killed.
