Introduction

The argument.

"What is a woman?" asks Simone de Beauvoir and thus presents the main
themes of the book:

(1) While man sees himself as independent of woman, woman always sees
herself in relation to man; while man is "essential," woman is "inessential";
while he is the "Subject," she is the "Other."

(2) Women have always been subordinate to men and have never shared the
world equally with them. Men are better off legally, economically, and
politically: the world belongs to them.

Unlike other minorities such as Jews and Blacks, women cannot aspire to
annihilate men, their oppressors, ...
