Chapter Twenty-Three
After his talk with O-lan, Wang Lung went into the court of Lotus. This
girl told him that the grain merchant, Liu, had a daughter whom the eldest son
might marry. However, Wang Lung was still hesitant. Then one morning the son
came home drunk. Wang Lung was especially angry after he discovered that his
uncle's boy had taken the eldest son into town. He decided that it would be
better for the son to be married immediately. But this could not be arranged
