Characterization
Wang Lung is the principal character in this novel. The entire story
revolves around his life. Perhaps it is more accurate to say that the story is
of his life. The novel begins with Wang Lung as a young man and ends with him
as an old man near death. It tells of his rise from a poor man to a rich land
owner.
Wang Lung is a peasant, but not a simple man. He is obsessed with the
idea of land; to him this is the only real wealth. It is the only thing that
cannot be stolen from a man and so every time he has an extra silver he buys
