The Shipman's Tale
Introduction:
With the Shipman's Tale we return to the tone and setting of the fabliau,
though the plot is a version of a type of folktale referred to as "the lover's
gift regained." The tale was obviously first intended for a woman, probably
the Wife of Bath, and many possibilities exist for bringing it into
relationship with other tales (the Merchant's, for example), though there are
no clear indications of any definite position in the grouping. Chaucer
probably had not come to a final decision on the matter. The general air of
scurrility which pervades the poem makes it appropriate enough to the rascally
