The difference in subject matter between the Songs and Sonnets and the
Divine Poems is sometimes taken, in view of Donne's later career as a
clergyman, to support a biographical theory of a young "Jack Donne," a
libertine sowing wild oats and recording his excesses in verse, and a
chastened John Donne, and Anglican Divine repenting the sins of his youth. The
sketchy facts, however, are hardly sufficient to lend substance to this
attractive notion. There seems to be a good deal of overlapping in the time
