Revolution was the key word of nineteenth-century Europe. It was the age
of industrial revolution, of scientific upheaval culminating in Charles
Darwin's Origin of Species, of political transformations brought on by the
appeals of nationalism, liberalism and-at length-socialism. Although it
escaped the violence and bloodshed that attended the change in the Continent,
Britain emerged triumphant from the Napoleonic wars, and faced a series of
