The Next Half Year

Tom has many visitors during his convalescence. Squire Allworthy called
almost every day and used his time well. He lectured Tom, "in the mildest and
tenderest manner," on his many deviations from a strict code of virtue.
Thwackum was also "pretty assiduous in his visits," and he too seized the
opportunity to lecture Tom. "His style, however, was more severe than Mr.
Allworthy's." And Square, predictably, found the recumbent and defenseless Tom
an admirable audience for his philosophical disquisitions on such subjects as
the unworthiness of a broken bone the serious consideration of a wise man.
